Just Plain Excellent! This is a MUST for cruising boaters. It is apparent from many of the reviews a lot of users don't understand what this app is meant to do. It is NOT a navigation app. It is NOT a chart or chartplotter substitute. What it IS is an offline database providing important and helpful cruising information to supplement your other systems - hence the name COMPANION. Want to know what services the marinas on your route offer - its got it. Want to know the docking fees at various marinas - check. Want to know about fuel prices - its there too. How about anchoring out tonight. Want some suggestions on where to and not to along your path - just check the map for comments. Even more important, want to know about hazards ahead and get warnings as you approach them - get this app. What makes this extremely functional is all the information is crowd sourced and as a result is current and meaningful. And yes the background map is a low resolution road map but again it is not meant for navigation - it just gives you an approximate location.reference of the POIs. The databases are downloaded to your device so NO internet connection is needed to use them and tracks with the device GPS. SWEET!

Still the best way to access hazard and marina info This app is the only app I know of that gprovides easy access to hazard and marina information while offline. We font cruise without it. Great planning tool.

Soon to be great app I hope that the updates start coming soon then this app will be great. It needs to show more details of the landscape around the water and the water depths. Also hopefully the zoom feature will begin to work better soon as well. I know that it says that updates are coming and I'm looking forward to them I love the old active captain & I think this one has the ability to be even better soon.
★★☆☆☆
Decent start, needs a lot of work. The ability to download the database to your phone, to be updated when in range is the real advantage to this app. Many times on the water, you are out of cell range having a local database is very useful. For this reason alone I'll keep it on my phone and keep an eye on development. However, to only have low resolution street maps and not nautical charts available is a severe drawback. The low resolution of the street maps when zoomed in makes the production look very unprofessional. This app must incorporate nautical charts as a backdrop instead of street maps. On the water we live by nautical charts, either raster or vector, not by street maps. I understand that this is not designed as a navigational tool but I consider that fact irrelevant as to whether nautical charts should be used. The nautical need to be there, the street map is nearly useless. Other improvements that should be made: Integration with default Android buttons. Get rid of the star and use the settings button already there. Incorporate the Android back button instead of the "done" button on each screen. Incorporate two finger zoom. Using + and - should be an option, but not the only option.
★★☆☆☆
Charting does not work on android phones or iphone even with Adobe Air installed. The Active Captain data is excellent but without good charts it's rendered useless at usable zoom levels.
